November 4th, 2056: The Last Fish In The World Dies
Industry pundits are agreeing today that early 21st century environmental scientists and fisheries experts were right when they predicted the world’s fish stocks would be depleted by mid-century. However, the industry spokespeople explained that protein tablets made from tar byproducts were just as healthy as fish protein and cost far less. Plans to increase the number of drilling platforms around the North Pole were also announced. “Ever since the troublesome ice finally melted,” said one, “exploiting the world’s last remaining reserves of crude oil is now financially viable.”

The arrogant attitude exhibited by these ‘industry pundits’ is exactly what is holding the world back from taking serious steps towards saving our planet from our own disasterous impact. Fish were not put on this earth solely to provide protein for humans. We are privileged to be able to use them as a source of food and well-being, but they are connected to the aquatic ecosystem in essential ways, as is all life. Other animals need them for food, they eat smaller species, their deaths enable regeneration and their simple presence on earth is a right we have no authority to deny them. We must stop thinking of animals and resources as simply existing for our benefit, and acknowledge that they have a value and a right to exist completely independent from what we may use them for.

Unfortunately, many in the media will say whatever they are told to say. They will say it in a very persuasive way and a lot of people will believe them. What to do?
